Sumario: | This work covers the rapid rise and fall of America{u2019}s first China factory. Bonnin and Morris established their china factory in 1770; two years later it had closed. Insufficient capital was part of the problem but the author postulates that the factory{u2019}s demise was also related to price cutting by the East India Company, a major supplier of chinaware (as well as other goods) to the colonies. The destruction of a local industry by the East India Company only a year before the Tea Act prepared the ground for Pennsylvania{u2019}s hostility toward the company in 1773. |
