| Sumario: | "The goal of this book is to understand how some young men exiting prison are eventually able to achieve some of the key markers of adulthood while others are not. Although prior research has examined the transition to adulthood among young people from low-income families and studied the lives of young adults at high risk of becoming disconnected, little prior work has focused on how this most vulnerable group of young adults moves from adolescence into adulthood. The central argument of the book is that the immediate post-prison experience is key to successful transition to adulthood among formerly incarcerated young men. The social contexts, institutional involvements, and social supports that welcome (or neglect) these men upon release are just as significant for their capacity to reintegrate into society as their pre-prison backgrounds, disadvantages, and experiences. In short, new trajectories are possible. But race constrains these possibilities. Race plays a huge role in determining the contexts, institutions, and social supports to which young men have access and influencing the quality of their experiences in these contexts and institutions. Among the formerly incarcerated, young black men face steeper hurdles to overcome and their post-prison trajectories reflect these deeper challenges. Throughout this book we document the challenges and achievements of 1300 young men who left Michigan's prisons in 2003 and whom we followed over time in administrative records.
