Sumario: | The author presents both a history of this first gold rush and a bounty of legends that evolved from it. She tells how it began in North Carolina, the state that supplied all domestic gold coined at the U.S. Mint between 1804 and 1828, and of the discovery of gold in Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and later in California and Colorado. She recounts how the Southern miners abandoned their mines within weeks of learning about the California gold strike, and, how for a while, they were said to be the only experienced miners working in the Western gold fields. |
