The raid's purpose was to sever the Confederate rail supply line from Virginia to the Western Theater, and Sanders and his raiders were largely successful. Brandes presents readers with the most complete account of the Sanders raid to date using Sanders's official reports, East Tennessee diaries and memoirs of the Civil War, and pertinent secondary sources.
