Sumario:McCloskey draws from ethnographic interviews with 77 Crown Point, New Mexico Navajo women to depict the cross-sections and distinctions among three generations--grandmothers, mid-life mothers, and young mothers--as they navigate the matrilineal traditions in Navajo society and the influence of wider American culture. Among the subjects discussed are education, the notion of wealth in children, employment, family formation patterns, motherhood, and tradition and change, all of which are rooted in historical and cultural context.
