|a In 1902 the Federal Government opened the flagship Sherman Institute, an influential off-reservation boarding school in Riverside, California, to transform American indian students into productive farmers, carpenters, homemakers, nurses, cooks, and seamstresses. Indian students built the school and worked there daily. The book draws on sources held at the Sherman Institute Museum.
