This book aims to show that the history of celibacy in the Catholic Church is far more complex, and far less univocal, than apologists for it have hitherto asserted. Having made the historical case against the idea that celibacy is somehow "apostolic," the book offers reflections on the life and unique vocation of married priests, including reflections on the role and experiences of the spouses and children of Catholic priests in both the Eastern Catholic as well as Latin (Roman) Catholic churches. There is a need for serious reflection and discussion on married priesthood in both its historical and theological-pastoral aspects-not least because more and more married priests are ordained in the Roman Catholic Church every year-converts from Anglicanism and Lutheranism especially. And then there are married Eastern Catholic priests whose presence in the Catholic Church remains one of its best kept secrets. The pastoral work of these men, and the collaboration of their wives and children, offer both a wealth of experience and challenges that the wider Catholic Church needs to know about-whether or not there is to be any change in the requirement of celibacy for Roman priests. This book tells those stories while also informing Roman Catholics of the unique challenges of a married priesthood. The result is a completely unique account, covering issues from a perspective that nobody else has done to date. It's essentially a handbook on the topic"--  |c Provided by publisher.
