After A Natural History of Human Thought, evolutionary anthropologist Michael Tomasello provides us with another seminal contribution." —New Scientist. A Natural History of Human Morality offers the most detailed account of the evolution of human moral psychology. According to Tomasello, there were two key stages in this evolution. The first occurred as ecological challenges forced early humans to gather together or die. To coordinate these collaborative activities, humans developed cognitive skills of joint intentionality that ensured that partners knew the normative standards of each role and committed them to sharing what was collected based on a shared sense of trust, respect, and responsibility. The second stage occurred as the human population grew and the division of labor became more complex. Different cultural groups arose that demanded from their members loyalty, agreement and cultural identity. As members of a new cultural "we," modern humans developed cognitive abilities of collective intentionality, giving rise to culturally created and objectified norms of right and wrong that everyone in the group could see as legitimate to those who were. one of us". Thus, Tomasello reconstructs, based on extensive experimental data comparing great apes with children, how early humans gradually became an ultra-cooperative and, eventually, moral species.
