520 |a "'Hakibbutz Ha'artzi, Mapam, and the Demise of the Israeli Labor Movement' tells the story of Israel's political transformation between the 1950s and the 1970s. It asks how the Israeli Labor movement, which played a leading role in building the country, lost its hegemony to the political Right in the 1977 elections and analyzes the historical origins of this dramatic event, known as the 'upheaval' (mahapach). Elmaliach argues that the political upheaval was the result of a long-term internal crisis in the Labor movement, beginning in the mid-1950s, during which its public support gradually collapsed until it reached the low point of the 1977 elections. In so doing, he seeks to offer an innovative analysis, suggesting that the crisis that led to the collapse of the Labor movement was the outcome of the manner in which its power had been built, and that it was rooted in the economic, social, political, and cultural processes that were at the foundation of its hegemony-in other words, that the sources of the Labor movement's strength were also the causes of its weakness"--Provided by publisher
