Sumario:The topic of the 1st Symposium of the Max Freiherr von Oppenheim Foundation and the present anthology ties in with the life's work of the founder, in which, in addition to the archaeological excavations on Tell Halaf in northern Syria, the Bedouins of Near East play a central role. Kai Lämmerhirt's contribution goes back to the oldest phase of the Arab Beduins riding on camels, as evidenced in writing. Stefan Leder provides a comprehensive presentation of the social, political, economic and cultural aspects of the Bedouins in Arab societies from the Koranic period to the present. Finally, Thomas Demmelhuber's contribution deals with the countries of the Arabian Peninsula that only acquired their own statehood in the 20th century.
