Sumario: | The Russian peasant community was the object of the most varied of ideas about order like hardly any other institution in the late tsarist empire. It was condemned by the elites as backward, idealized as an expression of Russian collectivity or functionalized as the lowest level of the manorial or state administrative apparatus. She took on a multitude of tasks for the peasants: she organized their coexistence, managed their economic affairs and regulated their relations with the authorities. Notions of rule-based administrative rationality, which were becoming increasingly popular among manorial and state reformers, were difficult to extend to them. When the Russian peasants were released from serfdom in 1861, there was some controversy about how to integrate them into the state. How could it be ensured that order prevailed and that state interests were safeguarded? Should the farming communities become part of the state administration or keep their special status? What role would the local aristocracy and the local bureaucracy play? Using the example of the Rjazan Governorate, the book describes the interrelationships between state and manorial reformers and the peasant self-government between 1834 and 1889 Period was not reduced, but on the contrary cemented. |
