Description
Summary:Hasankeyf is a small district town in south-eastern Turkey, which is also well known in Europe due to its imposing location on the banks of the Tigris and its numerous medieval monuments. The place also became notorious because this scenic and cultural gem of Eastern Anatolia is threatened with imminent sinking in the Ilısu reservoir, in the planning and implementation of which European companies are also involved. What is less well known, however, is that Hasankeyf also has a rich linguistic heritage: Like some other urban centers in the region, including Mardin, Siirt and formerly Diyarbakır, Hasankeyf is one of those places in Eastern Anatolia where the Arabic language in various dialects survived until the recently spoken as a mother tongue. Andreas Fink offers for the first time a grammatical overview of the Arabic dialect of Hasankeyf, also discusses the dialectological classification within the Anatolian group of the so-called Qəltu dialects and also offers an extensive collection of stories recorded on site in transcription and translation. In addition, the volume was preceded by a detailed historical introduction, in which extensive material from (Arabic, ancient Syrian, Armenian and other) sources, some of which had previously been ignored, was incorporated. A glossary opens up the vocabulary of the texts and also provides information on the origin of the non-Arabic words.
