Sumario:The provocation of reduction, which sociology has been confronted with since its beginnings, has an ontological and an epistemological dimension. From an ontological point of view, the question is whether the social has its own, so-called emergent quality of being or "only" consists of configurations of social actions that have arisen from the psychological and physical characteristics of the people involved. From an epistemological point of view, the question is accordingly whether or not one can derive theories about the social from theories about the psychic and physical. Sociology has always seen its very existence threatened by reductionism. It has taken refuge in an ontological and epistemological pluralism that completely defines its contours as a scientific discipline The articles in this volume are dedicated to clarifying this complex problem.
