Sumario:The almost one thousand fragments of alabaster vessels found in Assyria in the Vorderasiatisches Museum Berlin mostly come from Egypt. They were made there at the time of the New Kingdom (18th / 19th Dynasty) and discovered in Assur in official buildings, especially in the Old Palace. Most of these alabaster vessels came as booty from King Adad-nerari I via Mitanni to Assur, where they had previously ended up as state gifts from Egypt. A smaller part comes from the 3rd intermediate period and was in the 8th/7. Captured by the Assyrians in the Levant in the 19th century. In Assur itself, small alabastrons were made from thick-walled vessel parts that had already been shattered in antiquity. On the basis of material observation and analysis of different manufacturing techniques, the vessels made in Egypt can be distinguished from those made in Assur: vessels made of calcite-alabaster come from Egypt, those made of the softer gypsum-alabaster were made in Assur. Hans-Ulrich Onasch succeeds in connecting numerous vessel fragments found in Assur to the typology of Egyptian alabaster vessels developed by Barbara Aston (1994). He expands this typology, which essentially relates to vessels from the Old Kingdom, to include new types of Egyptian alabastrons that have not yet been found in Egypt itself. The alabaster vessels made of Ugarit serve as a reference material. Onasch ’study on the Egyptian alabaster vessels from Assyria not only makes a fundamental contribution to the classification of the Egyptian alabaster vessels, but also provides information on the otherwise only sporadic relationships between Egypt and Assyria.
