He investigates the conception of time in Old and Young Avestan as well as Middle Persian Zoroastrian texts and the historical development of Zoroastrianism. Topics such as the creation of time, the relationship between time and movement, the passage of time, the connections between time and fate, and systems of temporal order are given special attention here. The secondary tradition about the Zoroastrian understanding of time is also taken into account, in particular the Christian reports from the Sasanian period and the Arabic testimonies from the Islamic period. Based on these sources, Rezania presents a new interpretation of the Zurwan myth and its cosmogonic conception of eternity. In a concluding part, he turns to Zurvanism, which has been discussed in research for more than 200 years, and the relationship between the two cosmogonic conceptions of the Zurwan myth and the Pahlavi creation myth. The results obtained from the analysis allow him to elucidate the question of whether the Zurwan myth and the Pahlavi myth are two rival synchronic or two asynchronously coherent cosmogonic conceptions. | ||
