|a "Multiculturalism and Diversity in Clinical Supervision: A Competency-Based Approach" provides a significant, rich, and unique enhancement of the clinical training literature by describing key elements involved in attending to multicultural and sociopolitical differences between supervisors and supervisees, and between supervisees and their clients. Understanding the cultural context of behavior is critical to competent and ethical interventions in all areas of mental health work. Regardless of one's theoretical orientation, it is important to understand how culture and other aspects of identity influence the experiences of distress, dysfunction, strength, and resilience. For supervisors, diversity and multicultural competence includes an understanding and awareness of the many strands of supervisees' and their clients' identities, including sex and gender, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, social class, sexual orientation, heritage, immigration and generational experiences, ableness, religion, and spirituality. Such an understanding also involves an awareness of one's own identities and how those influence one's work. We as clinicians must understand how those strands of identity combine for supervisor and supervisee, and for therapist and client, and we must be able to engage in interventions on the basis of that understanding. This book provides invaluable insights into the impact of the multiple identities of each participant in the supervisory and therapeutic processes. It presents models for conducting competency-based multicultural clinical supervision.
