520 |a "The first edition of Heart and Mind, published in 1996 (Allan & Scheidt, 1996), summarized the empirical evidence associating psychosocial factors with coronary heart disease (CHD) in a single chapter. Since then, the database has expanded enormously. A search of "stress and cardiovascular disease" on PubMed (http://www.ncbi. nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) on September 15, 2010, yielded more than 50,000 entries, which included many citations in medical and cardiology journals, where their influence on medical practice will be far greater than in the past, when most reports were limited to psychology journals. The purpose of the current volume is to summarize the past 15 years of research on heart and mind by leaders in the field. In addition to cardiac psychology, our subject has been termed behavioral cardiology (Rozanski, Blumenthal, Davidson, Saab, & Kubzansky, 2005) and psychocardiology (Jordan, Barde, & Zeiher, 2006), attesting to a new medical specialty. Psychologists cannot, of course, refer to themselves as behavioral cardiologists or psychocardiologists, thus we have retained the terms cardiac psychology and cardiac psychologist for this book. Acceptance and widespread practice within the medical community, however, are far from commonplace"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved).
