520 |a Theories of the Sign in Classical Antiquity makes available in English Professor Giovanni Manetti's brilliant study of the origin of semiotics and sign theory. His accomplishment is a full reconsideration and analysis of the semiotic practices and the theoretical considerations of the sign which were developed in the ancient world and have come down to us through literary, philosophical, medical, historical, and rhetorical traditions. He seeks to discover the common thread that runs through the classical world from the very beginning of human thought to the fourth century A.D. In the "classical" tradition he sees a concept of the sign which is significantly different from that currently in use.
