Summary: | This book considers how monitoring using indicators can assist tourism to develop sustainably. It encourages the reader to view tourism from a broad, interdisciplinary perspective and draws on material from a wide range of sources including ecology, global change and the new and emerging field of sustainability science. The book explains why monitoring is important for different groups of stakeholders: public and private sector, NGOs and communities. It also puts particular emphasis on indicator use and implementation. Included are case studies presenting a wide range of monitoring experiences at various levels: at the international level in the case of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) indicator programme; at the regional level in the case of the Tourism Optimization Management Model (TOMM) Kangaroo Island Project in South Australia; at the national level in the case of the Samoa Sustainable Tourism Indicator Project (SSTIP); and at the sectoral level in the case of the Tourism Operators' Initiative (TOI) in Europe. The book has 12 chapters and a subject index. |
