Sumario: | Women of Color in Higher Education: Changing Directions and New Perspectives , in the Diversity in Higher Education series, rests on the belief that women of color possess strength and resiliency that are built from mountains and valleys they traverse in their lives that at times bear great costs but also result in accomplishments. The selection of chapters reflects senior and emerging scholars who examine critical questions through empirical research, theoretical analyses, and personal narratives that simultaneously juxtapose the advancement of women of color with the barriers that persist in the academy. The chapters draw on several theoretical frameworks to overlay empirical studies and conceptual analyses: signal theory, leadership theories, critical theory, critical race theory, critical race feminism, diversity narratives, gender theory, socialization model, and self-efficacy to augment multiple perspectives on the experiences of women of color in higher education. This volume sheds light on opportunities to advance African American attainment in STEM fields and disciplines throughout the academic and professional spectra, and the mitigation of disparities that continue to be so prevalent. |
