Jim's family has ranched in the Flint Hills since the 1870s and continues to do so to this day, both at Jim's Flying H Ranch and his son Josh's ranch in Chase County, the Flying W. The manuscript shares family stories and anecdotes about working ranch life alongside ruminations on the serene beauty of the Flint Hills, discussions of the ways that cattle ranching has changed over time, the history of the nearby town of Cassoday, the prairie's natural resources and efforts to preserve them, and tales of local legends and colorful characters (some of whom are also the author's relatives).
