|a "Like many of her characters, Alice McDermott was born in one of New York City's outer boroughs, Brooklyn, in 1953, to an Irish American Catholic family. She and her two brothers were raised in Elmont, New York, just east of the Queens border in southwest Nassau County on Long Island. McDermott's early education took place in the Roman Catholic school system, St. Boniface Elementary School in Elmont and Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, from which she graduated in 1971. While McDermott was studying for her bachelor's degree at the State University of New York at Oswego, Paul Briand, the instructor of a course in nonfiction writing, identified his young student's gift."--
