| Sumario: | These proceedings are the culmination of four weeks of workshop sessions, research, and discussion at Monash University before the conference on October 27-30, 1979. Subjects for papers were suggested by the results of these workshop sessions, by the mathematical preferences of the organizing committee, current research in semigroup theory, and suggestions by authors. One such submission discusses the importance of semigroups in the analysis of the foundations of scientific thinking.
