These peer-reviewed papers introduce the complexity of interacting surfaces (materials) with lubricants (either additives and/or base oils) and how tribometry evolved to disclose these interactions. Subjects include: new testing methodologies for generating tribofilms to determine functional properties like coefficients of friction, wear, and extreme pressure; fundamentals of tribometry specific to the environments of engine components tribology; the impact of developing vehicle powertrain technologies, surface and material technologies, and lubricant and additive technologies for friction and wear reduction; The articles in this special issue were featured at the Symposium on Tribometry and Tribochemistry held in June 2017. |
