520 |a A. E. Housman (1859-1936) achieved fame as the most eminent Latinist of the century and as a poet of a limited but rare perfection. Disdaining to prepare adequately for his Finals at Oxford, he failed to obtain an honours degree, and for eleven years worked for a meagre stipend at the Patent Office. In 1892 he obtained the Chair of Latin at University College, London, which he held for nineteen years until his election to the Kennedy Chair of Latin at Cambridge. He published A Shropshire Lad in 1896; between that date and 1922, when Last Poems appeared, his reputation as a poet grew year by year. Mr Scott-Kilvert's 1955 essay offers a critical and sympathetic analysis of Housman's character and of the relationship between his labours as a scholar and his achievement as a poet. It shows how his style was formed early and how little his poetry altered or developed throughout his life. Yet, to quote Mr Scott-Kilvert, 'he can take his place in the company of the acknowledged masters of the English tongue [...] the command of words and the proud integrity with which he practiced it are his greatest gifts'. A volume in the Writers and Their Work series, which draws upon recent thinking in English studies to introduce writers and their contexts. Each volume includes biographical material, an examination of recent criticism, a bibliography and a reappraisal of a major work by the writer.
