Sumario: | In this 1962 study, Bernard Bergonzi examines Powell's fiction through two distinct phases of Anthony Powell (1905-2000) career: his pre-war social comedy, and his twelve-volume series, A Dance to the Music of Time. Anthony Powell (1905-2000) was a novelist best known for twelve-volume series A Dance to the Music of Time. In this 1962 study, Bernard Bergonzi examines Powell's fiction through two distinct phases of Powell's career. Before 1939, Powell had built up an enthusiastic, though select readership, as a writer of social comedy. His novels have affinities with those of Evelyn Waugh, but they deal with a narrower stratum of English life, the area, as Walter Allen pithily describes it, 'where Mayfair meets Soho'. During the way he served in the army. But when he started to write again he moved away from the single novel to an altogether more ambitious project: A Dance to the Music of Time. A volume in the Writers and Their Work series, which draws upon recent thinking in English studies to introduce writers and their contexts. Each volume includes biographical material, an examination of recent criticism, a bibliography and a reappraisal of a major work by the writer. |
