Sumario: | "A significant film in terms of its early adoption of the Nouvelle Vague cinematography and editing techniques and notable for the controversy over its X-rating and subsequent Oscar, Midnight Cowboy has yet to be given its full due as a queer film classic. Towlson argues for the film's classic status as one of the first entries in the New Hollywood, but more importantly, as a proto-queer 'buddy movie' and forerunner to films like My Own Private Idaho (a paragon of the New Queer Cinema) and mainstream movies like Brokeback Mountain. The book draws on the John Schlesinger Papers housed at the AFI's Margaret Herrick Library in Beverly Hills to detail the film's production and reception, including its place in Schlesinger's filmography. The first section of the book would also offer an adaptation study of James Leo Herlihy's novel, an account of buddy-cowboy movies prior to and after MIDNIGHT COWBOY, and consideration of the film's significance as a star vehicle for Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman. The second part of the book would offer a textual analysis of the film in terms of its aesthetics and representations; looking particularly at its depictions of '60s New York LGBTQ2IA+ culture, its portrait of Times Square/ 42nd Street, and its featuring of Warholian 'superstars'. This leads to a close reading of the film's discourse/s on male prostitution, male relationships and sexual identity, connecting Midnight Cowboy to queer cinema, such as Warhol's My Hustler (1965) and Bruce la Bruce's Hustler White (1996), and Johns (Silver, 1997)."-- |
