Sumario: | Of all the subjects studied in anthropology, none have given rise to so many contradictory explanations and conflicting interpretations as the phenomenon of 'religion'. In this chronological overview Thinking about religion, Valeer Neckebrouck, who combines years of experience as an anthropological field worker with a thorough knowledge of the history of the discipline, discusses the most important thinkers who have contributed to the understanding of religion as a human phenomenon. In Volume I From Xenophanes to Robertson Smith, the author presents in a clear and accessible manner the most important thinkers from classical antiquity up to roughly 1860. The second volume From Hugo Winckler to Clifford Geertz treats the main currents since the mid-19th century, including evolutionism, intellectualism, diffusionism, French and British functionalism, the psychoanalytic school, religionism, and symbolism or "interpretative" anthropology. Neckebrouck subjects every theory that has made a substantial contribution to religious anthropology to an extensive and in-depth analysis and an often original critical evaluation. With Part III Contemporary Perspectives, author Valeer Neckebrouck has come to the conclusion of the chronologically conceived series Thinking about Religion. Anthropological theory and religion. The study of the anthropology of religion is discussed in this last part from the most leading contemporary models and perspectives. The secularization theories, postmodernism, feminism, neo-Darwinism and the cognitive anthropology of religion are discussed in detail, but also thinkers such as René Girard, Walter Burkert, Edward O. Wilson and Richard Dawkins are reviewed. For anyone who is interested in the phenomenon of religion and wants to know how anthropologists have thought about religion throughout history, this book is an indispensable and very richly detailed reference work. Until now, such a detailed description and critical evaluation of the subject matter has not been available in any language area. |
