Sumario:Secretly produced newspapers, magazines and leaflets have a long tradition as a means of disseminating opposition ideas. In the Netherlands, which was occupied from 1940 to 1945, in addition to these media, books were also often used as an instrument to stir up resistance against Nazi foreign rule: Dutch publishers circulated more than 1,000 literary publications, circumventing censorship measures, including a large number of high-quality books, sometimes even prints of an artistic and bibliophile nature. In her study, Carina Schmidt systematically analyzes the influence of underground literature on the formation of the Dutch resistance using the example of the most productive underground publishers De Bezige Bij, A.A.M. Stols, A.A. Balkema and De Blauwe Schuit. By evaluating relevant sources, production and distribution processes are traced and references to resistance groups are shown. At the same time, it is an exemplary study which, from research into literary resistance in the 'Reichskommissariat Netherlands', gains more fundamental insights into the role of books in oppressed societies and reveals the potential of the medium to contribute to the stimulation of resistance in state repressive systems.
