520 |a Adopting a resolutely materialist perspective, the author studies the socio-economic history of a French-Canadian community in the Sudbury region between 1890 and 1972. The study describes the transition, after the Second World War, from a mode of small independent production to the capitalist mode of production and explains how this transition affected the lives of French Canadians in Rayside-Balfour, west of Sudbury. The author focuses his attention on the parish, production and property relations, religious and secular power, and the demographic evolution of this French-speaking population. The book uses many documents, most of them unpublished, such as the title deeds of the Sudbury District Title Registry Office, data from the assessment rolls, the registers of the two French-speaking parishes, the lawsuits - Minutes of Town Council Meetings and Sudbury District Timber Books. Life stories of pioneers in the community reveal how these people viewed and experienced this time of transition.
