| Sumario: | Linguistics describes modality as a semantic category that expresses the speaker's position on the validity of the situation to which the statement refers. With an epistemic statement, the speaker signals an assertion that cannot or should not be asserted as factual or non-factual with regard to the respective facts. The speaker merely considers their existence more or less probable. Vjosa Hamiti's contrastive investigation analyzes and compares the possibilities of expressing the epistemic modality in German and in Albanian. Both languages have a wide range of language devices that express this modality. The subject of investigation are the grammatical categories of modal verbs, will + infinitive, modal words and the gradation particles well. The comparison of the two languages leads to a comparative analysis of German and Albanian, which works out the differences and similarities between the two languages and determines equivalents of the language means examined. Of particular interest is the fact that Albanian's rendering of the epistemic modality has no direct equivalent in German's means of expression. |
