Sumario:The Han Dynasty is considered to be one of the most important and glorious periods in Chinese history. Its founder Liu Bang grew up as a poor farmer's son and fought his way to the imperial throne in a civil war. The Chinese Empire experienced such a rise only once again in the person of Zhu Yuanzhang, who founded the Ming Dynasty 1500 years later. In the present study, Matthias Hahn deals with three pieces of the zaju theater that were written in the Ming dynasty and address the founding of the Han dynasty. Han yuanshuai an du Chencang (The commander-in-chief Han secretly crosses Chencang), Yun jimou Sui He pian Ying Bu (Using a clever trick, Sui He tricked the Ying Bu) and Han gongqing yi jin huan xiang (The Han officers return in brocade dressed to return home) play in the last years of the civil war and show the conflict between Liu Bang and his adversary Xiang Yu from different perspectives. Matthias Hahn translated the pieces into a western language for the first time. He compares the events presented in detail with reports from dynasty histories and other historical works and with his results offers fascinating insights into the relationship between fact and fiction in Chinese literature.
