This book analyzes both the global climatic situations and the reality of Chile with respect to its main sources of emissions, the impacts of the climate and its levels of vulnerability. The first section describes the scientific basis for climate change, highlighting the roles of the atmosphere, the energy balance, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) cycle in the Earth system. The second section focuses on the mitigation of GHG emissions in relation to the national sectors of electricity, transportation, solid waste management, agriculture, forests, changes in land use, and the economics and public policy of mitigation. Additionally, future GHG emission scenarios and international climate change mitigation policies are analyzed. The third section focuses on the analysis and discussion of problems of vulnerability, impacts and adaptations to climate change, with special emphasis on water resources, biodiversity, health, infrastructure, cities, the agricultural and forestry sector, in the ocean and coastal areas. The closing chapter focuses on past and present climatic changes in relation to the role and responsibility of human beings and the necessary and urgent development of environmentally responsible ethical conduct in the face of climate change. The book, although initially intended for university students, contains information and illustrations that are easy to access and understand for a general public and its ultimate goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the causes and consequences of climate change, as well as its mitigation and adaptation. .
