|a Few writers of note got to know the reality of the Second Republic of Poland (1918-1939) as well as Alfred Döblin, who toured the country for three months in the autumn of 1924. The resulting travel book is not only one of the most unusual testimonies to the culture of the Polish Jews, which was almost completely destroyed two decades later. It also tells of an assimilated Western Jew's encounter with Eastern Jewish culture, an experience that ranged from repulsion to fascination and that would become a key part of Döblin's productive affirmation of Judaism as well as his literary work. In her study, Marion Brandt explores Döblin's encounter with Poland and the Polish Jews for the first time using travel notes and manuscripts. The estate documents provide an insight into Döblin's writing workshop and allow the literarization and sometimes also the fictionalization of the travel experiences to be reconstructed. Typical text processes are, for example, the anonymization of interlocutors, the staging of orality, the design of understanding processes of the traveling I-figure and also the thematic structuring of parts of the text. The study uses methods of critique génétique, which are extended by a hermeneutic approach in the form of an examination of the formation of key concepts such as I, spirit and nation.
