Sumario:The history of the Old Kingdom has so far only been dealt with in the context of general survey works on Egyptian history. In order to show to what extent a reconstruction of the event history of the Old Kingdom is possible at all, Vera Blumenthal singles out certain statements and theses that are frequently expressed on this subject and checks them for verifiability. The author subjects groups of texts and monuments from which historical conclusions are regularly drawn to a source-critical analysis in order to be able to make statements about the extent to which the conclusions drawn from them are permissible. A special focus is on Egypt's external relations during the Old Kingdom and on the question of the end of the Old Kingdom: the controversial theses on the question of the cause of the fall of the Old Kingdom and on the question of the nature of the transition to the First Intermediate Period become one another compared and critically discussed. As a result, it can be shown that the picture of the history of the Old Kingdom is much more incomplete than has been suggested in the relevant literature. For future research, a new basis for dealing with the sources more sensitively and more strongly oriented towards historical methods will be created.
