Similar convergences can be found in religions, which is why languages, texts and religions are inseparable in this part of the world. Siegfried Tornow's introduction, which is both philological and religious-scientific, is divided into a descriptive part that deals with the specifics of South Asia in four chapters, presents the 39 most important living languages and shows their functions in politics, education, in the book and newspaper industry and as film languages. Using selected examples, the ideological implications of language, the attribution of language to denomination and nation and the role of language as a political tool. In the historical part, the relationships between language and religion from the Vedas to the present day, sacred languages and scriptures in Vedism, Jinism, Buddhism and Hinduism, Bhakti and Sufıya and the Bible translations are described. Further chapters are dedicated to an overview of the history of writing in South Asia and a brief description of the history of language and texts from the beginnings to the present day. Finally, 16 individual portraits of twelve of the 39 living South Asian languages and each of two ancient languages (Sanskrit and Pali) and two foreign languages (Persian and English) are given.
