Sumario: | The moon as a striking celestial phenomenon with its monthly changing shape also aroused great interest in ancient Egyptian culture. For the first time, Victoria Altmann-Wendling draws a detailed picture of the nature and effect of the heavenly body personified as God by bringing together all the relevant religious inscriptions and images relating to the moon. At the center of the comprehensive study are the text and image sources of the Greco-Roman temples, which provide the most extensive information about the moon in Egypt. In addition, papyri, grave scenes and funeral ensembles provide further information. The sources have all been translated, often for the first time, and commented on in detail, especially with regard to the underlying astronomical phenomena. Associated scenic representations were also subjected to an iconographic analysis and contextualization. Part 2 offers a diachronic overall analysis of the moon in ancient Egypt, which deals with representation types, designations and personifications. The practical implementation of astronomical "lunar knowledge" in festive cycles, rituals and cults is analyzed in detail. The evaluation leads to an innovative study of concepts and images of the moon , explain and evaluate, form the background of an ancient Egyptian "moon symbolism". |
