Sumario: | In "Scholars - Republic - Scholars' Republic", Marc Banditt examines the peculiarities of enlightenment tendencies in the city of Danzig. Its nucleus was formed by the Naturforschende Gesellschaft founded at the turn of the year 1742/43, one of the longest existing private associations in this field. The structural change of this partnership in the first 80 years of its existence is understood as the sum of a multitude of interlocking strands of development that characterized the advancing social penetration of the Enlightenment ideas and contents in the course of the 18th century. Despite the shifts in power in north-eastern Europe, which ended the autonomous position of the Hanseatic city in the form of the partition of Poland-Lithuania in 1793, it becomes clear that the history of the Gdańsk Natural Scientists Circle has more continuities than breaks. Both on the local and on the transregional level, the association generated itself as an elementary interface of interpersonal relationships, which were characterized by family ties, extensive networks of scholars and patronage relationships. In this way, the Natural Research Society embodied on the one hand the educational process within the city of Gdansk and on the other hand its importance as a scientific location in Europe at that time. |
