520 |a 1,562 / 5,000Translation resultsWhile material cultures have received a great deal of attention in the various academic disciplines over the past few years, research into the material worlds of Judaism is still in its infancy. So far, the focus has mainly been on valuable individual pieces that are closely linked to the rite. The anthology aims to develop new and more comprehensive approaches to Jewish culture and religion through the approach of material cultures. Above all, his contributions focus on the everyday culture of the Jewish rural population in Germany, because that is where the piety shaped by local traditions is most clearly reflected. After depictions of commercial goods as things of working life and the materiality of the Jewish house, aspects of the ritual baths (mikvah) are discussed, which make Jewish family life possible in the first place. Well-known object groups of the rite ("Judaica"), but especially Torah wrapping tapes (mappot) bind family and individuals into the community. The things of the synagogue with their genisot (repositories), which have so far been little studied, are religious-socio-cultural memorials and make historical processes of change tangible. This This also applies in a special way to Jewish cemeteries and their tombstones - no other material testimonies of Jewish life are of such great age and in such numbers even remotely preserved. The volume is aimed at all those who, stimulated by the media upheaval, are increasingly following Demand tangibility and concretization of theoretical knowledge.
