Sumario: | The present volume by Felix Siegmund is the first work in a western language that deals with the Korean military literature of the 17th century and presents it in its breadth. The upheavals, innovations and traditions of military literature and knowledge in the 17th century in China and Korea and their relationship to military practice are presented. Against the background of the Imjin wars and the Manchurian conquests, primarily military sources are used to examine how the military writings of Qi Jiguang were received, adapted and further developed in China and Korea. Social contexts are also taken into account. Carriers of military knowledge used their knowledge in practice and tried to construct discourses with which they could compete with Confucian scholarship. The study focuses on the northern border region between China and Korea, which, as a particularly heavily militarized and at the same time marginalized region, played an important role in military practice. At the same time, they tried to translate military knowledge into social prestige. |
