- The integration of Chinese migrants in Thailand is generally viewed as a success story in Southeast Asia. In no other Southeast Asian country have Chinese immigrants assimilated as well as in Thailand. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, a Chinese-language literature was able to emerge that was passed on and developed over generations. In her volume, Rebecca Ehrenwirth presents two contemporary authors of the third wave of Sinophone literature in Thailand. Sima Gong and Zeng Xin, both born in Bangkok, can be considered pioneers in the field of sinophone short stories and poetry respectively in Thailand. Her works, which not only deal with the question of national identities, illustrate how strong the connection is to both the country of origin (China) and the homeland (Thailand). For this purpose, Ehrenwirth translated more than 120 short stories and just as many poems from Chinese into German for the first time. Supplemented by a theoretical introduction to the immigration history of the Chinese in Thailand and a comprehensive literary analysis, it provides a deep insight into contemporary Sinophone literature in Thailand.
