520 |a "Everyone struggles to figure out how to lead our lives and to make our lives meaningful. What can one do that gives us satisfaction and feels like it makes a difference? Do one matter to others? Are one engaged in things that feel meaningful, whether through work or hobbies or family? Will one be remembered when one are dead? Can one make sense of our lives, tie the past to the present and future, and make meaning of our lives? These are the questions that stimulated this book. In it, the author describes how psychology and psychotherapy can address these questions. The key construct in this book is meaning in life (MIL). The audiences for this book are mental health professionals, clients who are interested in MIL, and students who are interested in learning about the theory, practice, and research related to MIL. The other audiences are researchers, and interested educated person outside of psychology. In the Prologue, the author describes his own journey searching for and reflecting about MIL. The main part of the book is split into four parts comprising 12 chapters. Part I covers what one knows theoretically and empirically about MIL. Part II involves applications of what one knows to psychotherapy and self-help. Part III is a description of the research program on MIL at the University of Maryland. Part IV includes a concluding chapter in which the author draws together what one have learned and reflects on future directions for theory and research."--Preface.
