While a new metropolis is emerging in Arcadia with megalopolis, in the Dodecanese the new founding of Rhodes is followed by the urban development projects of Halicarnassus, Kos, Knidos and Myndos, and in Macedonia King Archelaos is expanding Pella into his new capital. In his study, Martin Tombrägel reconstructs the course, causes and background of the urban development processes in these three regions, taking into account recent excavation results. The main interest is in the urbanistic achievements of the new late classical cities, in which, among other things, experiments are being carried out with the design of individual cityscapes. Tombrägel approaches his question taking into account two overarching research discourses: On the one hand, it analyzes the extent to which the natural, geopolitical and economic differences of the respective regions have affected the course of the urban development projects; on the other hand, the investigation is linked to a method-critical approach that asks how literary and archaeological sources can be historically interpreted individually and coherently. | ||
