Sumario: | The "lex rivi Hiberiensis", an inscription from the 2nd century AD discovered in Spain near Saragossa, offers remarkable insights into various aspects of everyday life in a rural area of the Roman province of Hispania citerior. In particular, it contains information about the local "pagi" and about agricultural irrigation in the west of the Roman Empire - aspects that have so far not been adequately researched due to the few available sources. What is special about the "lex rivi Hiberiensis" is that it does not regulate individual aspects of water supply like the few comparable inscriptions on the subject of irrigation, but rather that it contains detailed provisions for the organization of a community of canal users. New sources provide an opportunity to question the state of research and, if necessary, to confirm or correct it. Vanessa Einheuser's "Studies on the lex rivi Hiberiensis" offer, among other things, an explanation for the surprising fact that the important question of the concrete allocation of water to the individual neighbors is not addressed at any point in the inscription. Einheuser also suggests a version of the inscription's title, which has only been handed down in gaps, which differs from the first edition: "Lex rivalicia". In addition, the expiry of the oath ("iusiurandum") dealt with in §12b III 18-22 of the inscription is placed before the special water law context of the "lex rivi Hiberiensis". |
