Sumario: | In 1933 the prominent albanologist Eqrem Çabej (1908-1980) completed his dissertation in Vienna. At its center is the Siculo-Albanian dialect of Piana dei Greci (renamed Piana degli Albanesi since 1941) near Palermo, where Çabej had conducted field research for a few weeks. It offers the outline of a grammar in syn- and diachronic view, presents texts recorded on the spot (pastoral life and folk medicine, fairy tales, songs) as well as a glossary introducing the dialect vocabulary. The later mastery of the researcher is heralded unmistakably in the vivid and lively discussions on questions of language, history and culture of the Albanians (Arbëresh) who had emigrated to Italy from the Turkish invaders since the 15th century. Çabej's dissertation has so far gone completely unnoticed and is being made available to the professional world for the first time in this edition. It is supplemented by two additions which, on the one hand, illuminate the contemporary study situation in Austria (Oskar E. Pfeiffer) and, on the other hand, with a selection bibliography on Arbëresh, establish a link to research into Italian-Albanian up to the present day (Joachim Matzinger). |
