Sumario: | This is the first time a systematic analysis of the village administration and the structure of the village community in late antique Egypt (4th-8th century AD) is presented, which is based on several thousand newly processed papyrus documents in different languages (Greek, Coptic, partly Arabic). form. A special research problem has always been the difficult to understand terminology of the official titles in the villages. Their microphilological investigation therefore takes up the largest part of this book. The results obtained from this then open up a comprehensive perspective on local administration and society in the transition from Byzantine to Arab rule. Accordingly, the administrative structure of the villages showed a relatively uniform scheme, although there were pronounced regional tendencies. Contrary to earlier opinions, late antique Egypt was characterized by strong, self-confident village communities. A comparison of the Egyptian evidence with various sources from Palestine, Syria and Anatolia suggests that villages in the late antique eastern Mediterranean were organized along similar principles. The work was awarded the Philippika Prize from Harrassowitz Verlag, as well as the Ruprecht-Karls and Dr. Gerhard Ott Prize of the University of Heidelberg. |
