520 |a As early as 1833, Friedrich Perthes called for "a training institute for apprentices in the book trade" to be set up in Leipzig, "where, as the center of the German book trade, the good should come out for the same". But it was not until 20 years later that the German Booksellers College was opened by Friedrich Fleischer, chairman of the Leipzig Booksellers Association. Initially intended for apprentices whose companies were members of the association, from 1905 the school became the central training and further education center for the book trade in Germany and, as a private institution, anticipated the extremely successful dual system of vocational training. During the inflationary years, the Börsenverein took over the school in 1928, which has since been known as the German Booksellers College. With the founding of the GDR, the bookseller training institute lost its independence and technical college standards. It was nationalized and became a central vocational school, at which apprentices from all districts had to complete a special course. After reunification, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels handed over the re-privatized school to the city of Leipzig, which in 1993 united it with the book printer training institute to form a vocational school center for books, offices, printing, media, languages and art. Reimar Riese shows the development of this institution on the basis of its interdependence with industry-specific economic as well as with socio-political and socio-cultural conditions during the imperial era, the Weimar Republic, the National Socialist dictatorship and the GDR. The knowledge gained from a wide range of sources illuminates the previously unexplored history of bookselling training in Germany.
