Sumario: | Otto Böhtlingk is one of the outstanding scientists of the 19th century. His work on Indian grammar and, above all, his epoch-making Sanskrit dictionary shaped Indian studies significantly and contributed to their further development. Born in St. Petersburg, he was a student of Franz Bopp in Berlin and of A. W. von Schlegel and Christian Lassen in Bonn. At an early age he was appointed to the Academy of Sciences in his hometown, to which he belonged until the end of his life. In 1868 he finally moved to Germany in order to be able to fully devote himself to his scientific work. Agnes Stache-Weiske examines the life and academic career of the Indologist on the basis of his correspondence, letters from third parties and unpublished archive material. The biography focuses on Böhtlingk's international scientific network as well as on his family environment and his private friendships. In many respects, his correspondence sheds new light on Böhtlingk's personality as a person and researcher and shows how much he was in contact not only with the scholars of his time, but also with the next generation of scientists. |
