|a The Neo-Aramaic language Turoyo was originally native to the Tur 'Abdin region of south-eastern Turkey (central Midyat) and is still spoken today by Syrian Orthodox Christians in Middle Eastern and European exile. Despite the widespread and good documentation of this language, a detailed description of the syntax remained a desideratum of research for a long time. With this volume, Michael Waltisberg closes this gap. In addition to data from two native-speaker informants, most of the previously published Turoyo texts in village dialects, most of which were edited by Helmut Ritter and Otto Jastrow, serve as sources for the study. The syntactical material is presented in the three main chapters: noun phrase, simple sentence and complex sentence and illustrated with a wealth of examples. The methodological approach is inductive and functionally oriented, in that the linguistic findings precede the formulation of the rules and language is viewed as an abstract system that interacts with semantic and pragmatic factors. A general characterization of the Turoyo syntax concludes the book.
