Sumario:This book draws upon Oxfam experiences in different emergency situations to provide a reference tool for health workers working in relief and refugee camps. The first two sections of the book deal with issues most likely to arise in the first months after displacement. Section 1, on assessment and planning, discusses 1) a checklist of information required for assessment, such as demography, camp environment, logistics, shelter, environmental health, food and nutrition, health status and medical care, and psychosocial issues and 2) a planning process based on this assessment. Section 2 contains information on implementation and monitoring programs to provide a health information system, delivery of food and nutrition, preventive health care, control of communicable diseases, clinical care, psychosocial issues, and training. The third section covers health issues arising from long-term displacement, and section 4 briefly reviews the purpose and process of evaluation. Appendices provide additional details on mortality rates, nutrition surveys, the nutritional values of food aid commodities, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, supplementary feeding recipes, water quality and chlorination, lists of essential drugs, and treatment protocols and vaccine management as well as a sample monitoring and surveillance form.
